Although the artist does not date the painting in the inscription, he indicates that the painting was inspired by an anonymous Southern Song dynasty work River Pavilion, Autumn Clouds. Huang Binhong spent the years 1936-1937 doing a major survey of the paintings in the collection of the Palace Museum, sketching in notebooks to make notes on compositions and brush techniques of past masters. It is likely this painting was inspired by his time with the Imperial Collection.
