He was born in Maoming, Guangdong province, and rose to the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Nationalist Party of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).The collector of this lot as well as lot 280 and 287 was Albert Hydeman, a businessman and devoted patron of the arts. Owner of the P. Wiest and Son department store in York Pennsylvania, he was a close friend and patron of Thomas Hart Benton, the regionalist painter from Missouri. He also had an early appreciation for Chinese painting, and sponsored Chinese artists, such as Hu Yuji (Henry Wo Yue-Kee, born 1924), to travel to the United States. Upon his retirement, Albert Hydeman liquidated his American art collection and moved to Hong Kong, where he became a devoted patron and collector of Chinese painting.
