However, he did not began painting in earnest until his thirties. By the 1960's his compositions approached pure abstraction, and for his innovative approach with traditional media, the artist is considered to be a seminal figure in the Modern Ink Art Movement in Hong Kong. In the artist's own monograph A Study of Chinese Painting published in 1957, he stated simply "for art, 'form' matters." 藝術必須有『形』.
