AN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS 'ROCK AND LANDSCAPE' SNUFF BOTTLE Zhou Shaoyuan, 1901PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF KIM GREENAN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS 'ROCK AND LANDSCAPE' SNUFF BOTTLEZhou Shaoyuan, 1901Of elongated, rectangular form with shoulders sloping to a cylindrical neck with flat lip and standing on a carved oval footrim, the interior of the bottle very well painted with ink and watercolors, one side with a scholar and his attendant standing on a river bank set in a mountainous landscape with a pavilion nestled in pine trees with rolling hills in the distance, the reverse with a convoluted rock with a bronze planter filled with grasses to one side and a second taller vase of blossoming flowers, signed Zhou Shaoyuan and dated xinchou qiu ri (autumn of 1901).2 1/2in (6.4cm) high辛丑 (1901) 周少元 玻璃内畫賞石博古及山水人物鼻煙壺一件《周少元》款Provenance:George Zavadil Quinn's Auction House, December 4, 2010 Kim Green collection no. 124Zhou Shaoyuan was reputed to be a nephew of Zhou Leyuan with his painting years from extant bottles being 1901-1909. This bottle was painted in the first year of his known works and clearly exhibit the influence of his uncle, in this case very obviously with one side being painted with a mountainous landscape and the reverse with a large rock, both clearly echoing the style of his elder. Although Zhou's calligraphy did not reach the artistic heights of his uncle's work, it is nevertheless competent for an inside-painted artist.
