Description Large exceptional late Qing dynasty Chinese soapstone sculpture depicting a seated Guanyin viewing the water moon. With polychrome painted highlights. Each foot is resting on a lotus blossom, one raised with an arm resting on the knee. The figure is surrounded by swirling water. This work previously belonged to Zaiyi (Chinese, 1856-1923) (better known as Prince Duan), and according to his great-granddaughter Hengyi Aixinjueluo, it was brought with him into exile.Provenance: The shrine of Prince Duan by descent to his great-granddaughter Hengyi Aixinjueluo; James D. Julia Auctions, Maine, February 4, 2012, Lot 3113; Private Minnesota Collection.Condition Report There is a repair to the sculpture's right foot (the lowest foot) where it rests on a flower. The foot and flower have broken off and been repaired. There is a large crack extending from the back of the boulder the figure rests on around the side and through the flower that the upper-most foot rests on. There is a possible restoration along the figure's back: a hairline crack is visible and the area around it fluoresces under UV light. There is a small loss to the waves along the lower left of the sculpture. Wear to the underside consistent with age and use. Light wear throughout consistent with age and use. Some dirt and dust accumulated along the recessed areas of the sculpture.Please contact us for a detailed condition report.
