Description Joachim Ferdinand Richardt (Danish/American, 1819-1895). Oil on canvas Hudson River School style painting depicting St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Signed and dated along the lower right. He is well known for his paintings of landscapes, castles, manors, and other various tourist attractions, especially Niagara Falls. Two of his works are hung in The White House in Washington, D.C. One painting, a 1856 view of Niagara Falls, was chosen as the backdrop for the luncheon following the second inauguration of Barack Obama in Statuary Hall.Condition Report The painting is in fair condition overall. The colors are bold and bright and the surface is stable. There is craquelure throughout the work. There are two areas with restorations and inpainting in the sky along the center of the work; one small spot measuring approx. 1/8 inch in diameter; one spot measuring approx. 1.5 inches x 3 inches. There are a few minute restorations along the extreme edges of the work, particularly along the lower right. There is a network of small inpainting/restorations running horizontal along the lower right. All spots fluoresce under UV light. Along the lower left there are signs of moisture exposure; the area fluoresces under UV light. The painting has been relined and restretched.
