HOSONO HITOMI (1978-) Royal Fern Bowl Heisei era (1989-2019), 2016Important works of art from an American private collectionHOSONO HITOMI (1978-)Royal Fern Bowl Heisei era (1989-2019), 2016The wheel-thrown porcelain vessel applied outside with molded and carved royal fern forms in low relief, the interior finished in gold leaf, the base incised with signature Hitomi (in Japanese) and Hitomi Hosono (in English) and date 2016 7 1/2 x 8 5/8in (19 x 22cm)After graduating in Japan, Hosono Hitomi (see also lot 819) studied in Denmark and England, where she interned at the Wedgwood factory, learning to attach molded components to the body of a piece before the clay has fully dried. She soon developed her own unique practice, taking molds of plant forms and then reworking them before applying them to a pre-thrown porcelain vessel until the underlying surface is completely hidden. Now based in London, Hosono's transnational creativity has earned her a worldwide audience. One of her largest works, which took six months to finish, is in the British Museum.
