A GOLD LACQUER TIERED BOX WITH AN INNER TRAY Edo period (1615-1868), 19th centuryProperty from the collection of Paul and Helen AnbiderA GOLD LACQUER TIERED BOX WITH AN INNER TRAYEdo period (1615-1868), 19th centuryComprising a two-tiered box, perhaps for okashi (sweets served during chanoyu) topped by a tray, the whole assemblage covered by a kabusebuta (overhanging) lid, the sides almost completely cut away so that it also serves as a miniature table, the lid with a waterfall plunging from a mountain crag from which a pine tree grows, with younger pines below, with the lid removed the tray and the sides forming a continuous design of chidori (plovers or "wave birds"), rocks, and waves, the corner elements of the lid repeating the design so that it remains continuous when the lid is in place; the wood substrate covered in fine gold nashiji over black lacquer, the decoration principally in gold and silver takamaki-e with accents of gold kirigane; with copper-alloy cord fittings 4 3/8 x 4 3/4 x 4 3/8in (11 x 12.2 x 11cm)ProvenancePaul Champkins, International Asian Art Fair, New York, March 30, 1998ExhibitedCornell University, Herbert F.
