In both paintings we see two views of the subject, one from behind, and one of her face, reflected in the mirror. This approach can also be found in one of the earliest Chinese figure paintings, Gu Kaizhi's (345-406) Admonitions scroll. In Gu Hong's version, the subject is seated at a table, with a tiered box and a blue and white porcelain jarlet, with the mirror on a cloud form stand. The cut wisteria blooms in the vase provides a seasonal aspect to the painting, indicating the scene is set in summer.
