A Chinese export famille rose and rouge-de-fer 'Pocock' armorial leaf-shaped dishQing dynasty, Qianlong Period, circa 1761Enamelled and gilt to the centre with the arms of Pocock impaling Drake, encircled by the ribbon of the order of Bath with its motto, 'Tria Juncta in Uno', all surrounded by floral sprays and birds, the rim with an iron-red and gilt chain border, the handle in the shape of a stem, 30.5cm long.清乾隆 粉彩紋章瓷盤This is one of three services made for Sir George Pocock (1706-1792), Admiral of the Blue and Knight of the order of the Bath.D. S. Howard points out an incongruence in the coat of arms, which includes the ribbon of the Order of the Bath, but not the augmentation of the arms, a sea-horse between two eastern coronets and the word 'Havannah', both granted at the same time on 26 May 1761, thus suggesting that the service was ordered from China earlier that year.Cf. D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I, Faber & Faber and Heirloom & Howard, London, 1974, p.566.This lot will be included in the upcoming revision of D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I undertaken by Heirloom & Howard.
