A GROUP OF FOUR BURMESE LACQUER DISHES 19th/20th Centuryprising a shallow circular tray decorated to the centre in gilt with an elephant within a floral medallion, all on a red lacquer ground, the second tray painted in gilt on a red lacquer ground with a chinthe enclosed within a quatrefoil panel and surrounded by scrolling leafy motifs, and two circular trays part-decorated using the yun technique but left unfinished, 18 - 26cm diameter (4) - PROVENANCE: Collection of Prospect Burma, UK. - The red lacquer tray decorated with an elephant previously in the collection of a British missionary family who lived in Burma during the 1920s-30s; The two black and red trays previously donated by Elizabeth Barraclough, OBE, in May 2004. Elizabeth Barraclough (1912-2006) worked in the British Foreign Service, and was posted to Singapore and Canton before being re-assigned to Burma, where she lived in the then-capital Rangoon. Her aplishments during her eight-year stint earnt her advancement to OBE in 1956. -
