A LANGYAO GLAZED ‘BELL-SHAPE’ BRUSHWASHER, QING DYNASTYChina, 18th – early 19th century. Of bell form with a spreading foot and lipped rim, the exterior and interior evenly applied with a finely crackled glaze of crushed-strawberry tone thinning to white in some areas, the rim left white, the flat base unglazed to reveal the buff ware.Provenance: German trade. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws. The foot smoothened in some areas, probably inherent to manufacturing, due to the uneven glaze dripping along the foot rim which is expected from this type of ware.Weight: 134.2 g Dimensions: Height 6.1 cm, Diameter 6.2 cmLangyao is a vitreous red glaze that was developed at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns under the supervision of Lang Tingji (1663-1715), governor of Jiangxi Province between 1705 and 1712. This copper glaze turns red after being fired in a reducing or oxygen-deprived atmosphere. It sometimes drips down the vessel during firing, creating drops around the foot. It is incredibly hard to achieve, with layering of clear and copper-rich glazes allowing for depths of color, as clearly evidenced by the present lot. The glaze must be of a certain thickness to turn red, so areas where it is thin can be lighter in color or even white.
