Description

Property from a Swiss Private CollectionA pair of spinach-green jade 'Immortals of Mount Fantong' brushpotsQing dynasty, Qianlong period (2)Height 14 cm, 5½ in.__________________________________________________________________________Collection particulière suissePaire de pots à pinceaux en jade vert épinard à décor des 'Immortels du mont Fantong', dynastie Qing, époque Qianlong__________________________________________________________________________瑞士私人舊藏清乾隆 碧玉「樊桐仙侶」筆筒一對来源: Acquired by the great grandfather of the present owner, and thence by descent in the family.__________________________________________________________________________現藏家之祖父得,此後家族傳承专文: This finely carved pair of spinach-green jade brush pots represent rare examples of the high-quality jade works of art produced during the Qianlong court. With the conquest of Yutian (modern Xinjiang province) in 1759, the Qianlong court gained direct access to jade materials of high quality and in great quantity, resulting in a golden age of jade production. During this period, highly skilled craftsmen treated the jade surface as if it were paper or silk, creating intricate painterly scenes, but adding three-dimensionality through high-relief carving.Spinach-green jade brush pots crafted for the Qing court often feature figure scenes depicting literati or immortals, conveying auspicious meanings and wishes of good fortune. The carvings on the two brush pots in this pair are not identical but complementary, both depicting an immortal accompanied by his servants bearing gifts, heading towards a pavilion in the distance. Even with an increasing supply, large-sized jade materials are not very common and producing a pair of brush pots both in landscape were very luxurious and rare even in the Qing court.Compare a similar brush pot illustrated in Yubao qiulin, Qinggong jiucang yuqi/ Treasure of Imperial Jade, The Collection of the Qing Court Special Exhibition, Beijing, 2018, pl. 36, p. 140; another example from the Qing imperial collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jade ware III, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 168; compare also a similar spinach-green jade brush pot, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th April 2011, lot 3219; and one sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th May 2012, lot 3961; a pair of spinach-green jade brush pots in smaller diameter, illustrated in The Woolf Collection of Chinese Jade, London, 2013, pl. 50, p. 146.__________________________________________________________________________此對碧玉筆筒雕工精湛,乾隆御制玉器罕有出其右者。
