A LAMBADI TRIBE WIRE-WRAPPED METAL HANSLI TORQUE, c. 1900sRajasthan or Gujarat, India, around 1900. The torque is made of a single white metal rod intricately wrapped in metal wire with patterns of lines and snake-like bands, at the front there is a beaded roundel, the arms of the metal rod go through the roundel, with one arm designed to spring out so that the torque can be opened and worn around the neck, in addition, it also features three loops from which chains of different sizes are suspended. Despite its size, the necklace is surprisingly light in weight. Condition: Good condition with expected traces of use and wear. One chain partially lost. Provenance: Romy Rey Collection, London. Romy Rey (1938-2020) was born in Zurich, Switzerland, studied in Paris and Geneva, and settled in London in the 1960s. She shared her life with the artist Brian Davies (1942-2014), in London and in Southern France. Romy was an avid traveler and dedicated collector of tribal art. Her paintings often portrayed images of ancient or tribal objects in imaginary settings.
