AMENDMENT: Please note, this French 'Globe de Mariee' is late 19th century in age and not 20th century as previously catalogued. A glass domed gilt metal and fabric table centrepiece, early 20th century, designed as an elaborate chair with gilt repoussé oak leaves and daisies, with bevelled glass mirrors, surmounted by a bird in flight, with black painted wood base, approx. 52cm highFootnotes: Hailing from 18th and 19th century France, a ‘Globe de Mariee’ displays and protects souvenirs chosen by a newly married couple to reflect their love for each other. These were oftenmissioned by the family of the couple from a jeweller or watchmaker, and the design of the garniture would be a serious undertaking for both bride and groom. Many of the decorative features are laden with symbolism: the central mirror reflected the soul and represented truth, the smaller diamond mirrors for the number of children the couple hoped to have, the bird above was for household peace, the daisies for purity, and the oak leaves for a strong foundation.
