Jabez Goldar, British 1729-1795- Twelve historical figures, from Harrison's edition of Rapin's 'History of England'; eight engravings, each 29.5 x 19.3 cm.; together with four further engravings for Harrison's edition of Rapin's 'History of England', by different hands, each 29.5 x 19.3 cm., twelve (12). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present illustrations alle from the English edition of Paul de Rapin's (1661-1725) 'History of England', first written in French in 1724-7, which was published by John Harrison between 1785 and 1789. The images by Goldar include: Egbert, King of the West Saxons, first Monarch of all England (770/5-839); King Canute the Dane (994-1035); William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester (1398-1486); Catherine of Aragon, Queen of Henry VIII (1485-1536); Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper (1510-1579); Francis Lord Cottington (c.1579-1652); Archbishop Williams, Lord Keeper (1582-1650); and Sir William Temple (1628-1699). The engravings by other hands depict: Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford (1527-1585); Henry Prince of Wales, son of King James I (1594-1612); Elizabeth, Princess of Palestine & Queen of Bohemia (1618-1680); and Henry Duke of Gloucester, brother of King Charles II (1640-1660).
