Raymond Lynde, British 1854-1928- Portrait of a man, standing half-length, wearing naval clothing; oil on canvas, signed 'Raymond Lynde' (lower left), 61 x 43.4 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lynde lived at 10 Porchester Gardens, in Bayswater, London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1899, with a painting entitled 'Netta'. Indeed, he was perhps best-known for his dreamy portraits of female sitters, often surrounded by flowers or apanied by pets. The present work is imbued with a greater gravity, with the dark, unadorned background befitting the subject, who is dressed in naval clothing, and regarding the viewer with particular sincerity.
