A YELLOW JADE RUYI-LOBED BOX AND COVER, QIANLONG PERIOD
China, 1736-1795. Superbly carved, the cover with a central medallion enclosing a fisherman angling from his sampan beneath rocky outcrops with leafy bamboo and lingzhi springs as well as a long branch bearing two pomegranates, all encircled by six neatly incised ruyi-heads forming the rim of the box and cover. The translucent, smoothly polished stone is of an even and fine yellow tone with few minor russet inclusions and milky speckling.

Excellent condition with some old wear and few microscopic nibbles.

Yellow jades were considered as the rarest
among nephrite jades of various tones. The innate value of yellow jades in the eyes of connoisseurs throughout time is best exemplified in the book Zun sheng ba jian, written by the late Ming scholar Gao Lian, where he mentions: ‘People now cherish white jade and they set little store by yellow jade, which is nothing but a sign of poor judgement.’ (fifth chapter)

乾隆時期菱花口蓋盒

中國，1736-1795 年。 菱花口，子母口，蓋子面雕刻精美，中央開光雕刻崖下一個漁夫在船上釣魚，石下有竹子和靈芝，樹枝上還長著兩個石榴。邊緣整齊雕刻如意紋。半透明玉石，表面光滑，具有均勻細膩的黃色調，帶有少量的赤褐色內沁和乳白色斑點。
