A SANDWICHED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, CHINA, 1730-1860
Of flattened form, the ovoid body raised on a flat oval foot and surmounted by a short waisted neck with a wide opening, as expected from an early glass bottle. The sandwiched glass with attractive swirls of yellow, green, red, brown, and blue between two clear layers.


Provenance
: From the collection of Cynthia G. Locke. Cynthia Graser Locke (1923-2019) was an American collector of snuff bottles who lived in Duxbury, Massachusetts. She was an active member of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society which allowed her to travel the world, attending many of the Society’s conventions.

Condition
: Excellent condition with minor old wear and expected manufacturing irregularities.

The colorful, variegated swirls
provide a wealth of potential as the abstract markings are capable of transformation into a myriad of subjects through sheer imagination. The random patterns on this bottle for example may resemble spontaneous brush strokes, drifting incense smoke, or goldfish swimming amidst weeds in a pond.
