A ‘MAGPIES’ PAINTING FROM THE IMPERIAL PALACE IN BEIJING, QING DYNASTY
China, 1644-1912. Ink and watercolors on paper. Exquisitely painted with vibrant blooms of magnolia and peony as well as budding flowers, a pair of chirping magpies perched on a gnarled branch.
Inscription
: Lower right, inscribed ‘Tapisserie du palais impérial à Pekin, l'abbé Fr. Ruhlmann’ (Tapestry from the Imperial Palace in Beijing, Abbot Fr. Ruhlmann).
Two seals, ‘Bao Yuan zhi yin’ (seal from Bao Yuan) and ‘Songming’.
Provenance
: Collection of Fr. Ruhlmann, France, late 19th century, and thence by descent to the last owner. An Austrian antiques dealer, acquired from the above. An abbot who lived during the 19th century in Alsace, Fr. Ruhlmann is mentioned by church historian Joseph Gass (1867-1951) in “Fr. Ruhlmanns historische Arbeiten, pages 334-342. Notice nécrologique sur l'abbé Ruhlmann, érudit”.
Condition
: Fair condition with significant wear, soiling, foxing, creasing, and some losses.
