A SEMI-FORMAL MIDNIGHT-BLUE-GROUND KESI SILK ROUNDEL ROBE, CHINA, 1870s
Finely worked with eight symmetrically arranged roundels woven with butterflies amid blossoms of peony, lotus, magnolia, and prunus borne on leafy stems and partially in precious vases, all picked out in vibrant shades of salmon, green, blue, and red, all above the terrestrial diagram and lishui stripes separated by polychrome lingzhi clouds and foaming waves interspersed by the Eight Buddhist emblems (bajixiang). The sleeves each with three similarly woven smaller roundels and the sleeve ends with lishui, clouds, and waves.
Provenance
: From the collection of Sir Ambrose Heal, acquired before the 1920s, and thence by descent in the family, according to family repute. Sir Ambrose Heal (1872-1959) was an English furniture designer, retailer, and manufacturer active in the first half of the 20th century. He served as the chairman of Heal's (then called Heal & Son) from 1913 to 1953 and established an art gallery at Tottenham Court Road showing works by Picasso and Modigliani. Some of his collections are now preserved at the British Museum. He was the author of five books: London Tradesmen's Cards of the XVIII Century (1925), The English Writing Masters and their Copy Books (1931), The London Goldsmiths (1935), Signboards of Old London Shops (1947), The London Furniture Makers (1953).

: Very good condition with only little soiling, the interior with some discoloration, minor pulls, and few tiny losses.
