Description

A BROWN-GROUND SILK EMBROIDERED NINE-DRAGON ROBE, JIFU, QING DYNASTY
China, 1800-1850. Finely couched in gold-wrapped threads with the prescribed nine five-clawed dragons writhing and pursuing flaming pearls amid satin-stitched lingzhi-shaped clouds interspersed with flying bats, Buddhist symbols, and peony blossoms. Further worked in forbidden stitch with auspicious symbols, all above the terrestrial diagram surrounded by crashing waves with Buddhist symbols and precious objects, below lishui stripe, also embroidered in forbidden stitch with rotating bats and peony blossoms. The black-ground horseshoe cuffs and collar similarly decorated with dragons and bats.

Provenance:
From a private collection in France, acquired from Linda Wrigglesworth in the 1990s. Finding her passion for Chinese textiles in 1976, when encountering her first dragon robe, Linda Wrigglesworth opened her gallery in 1978, and over the following decades became one of the world’s leading experts in antique Chinese costumes and textiles, helping to buy and sell pieces to private collections and public institutions worldwide. She has written countless articles and curated countless exhibitions. In 2008 she retired from her business and sold her private collection of Imperial textiles at Christie’s New York.

Condition:
Good condition with expected wear, minor soiling, few loose threads, small tears, tiny losses, and minor fading.

Dimensions: Length 147 cm, Width 211 cm (across sleeves)

During the Qing dynasty, court costume was strictly codified
to represent rank and status. Textiles of bright yellow were only worn by the Emperor, Empress, Dowager Empress whilst other members of the imperial family wore varying shades of yellow. Brown, considered as a ‘lesser yellow’, was worn by other members of the imperial clan, including the emperor’s sons-in-law and imperial dukes.
