A RICHLY GILT THANGKA DEPICTING PADMASAMBHAVA, TIBET, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
Distemper and gold on cloth. The Great Master is seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne, his hands holding a vajra and kapala while a khatvanga topped with a trishula rests in the crook of his left arm, wearing voluminous robes, his face with a semi-wrathful expression, backed by a foliate mandorla and circular halo. Flanked by his consorts Mandarava, seen holding an arrow, and Yeshe Tsogyal, heavily robed holding a kapala, surrounded by a retinue of dakinis, Buddhas, lineage holders, and wrathful protectors.

Good condition with minor wear, soiling, few small losses, minor creasing, loose threads to edges.

Padmasambhava is considered one of the principal early teachers
who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century alongside Trisong Detsen and Shantarakshita. Padmasambhava has numerous forms representing outer, inner, and secret aspects of his spiritual being. He is known by many different names which generally follow chronologically his life story. Aside from Trisong Detsen and Shantarakshita, the most important figures to interact with Padmasambhava were his principle Tibetan consort Yeshe Tsogyal, seen on the present thangka seated to Padmasambhava’s right heavily robed holding a kapala, and the principal Twenty-five Disciples.

西藏十八至十九世紀唐卡蓮花生大士

布面膠彩描金。上師坐在蓮花寶座上，手拿金剛杵和嘎巴拉碗，三叉戟“卡杖嘎”靠在肩上，身穿袈裟，面帶忿怒，葉狀光背。空行母耶喜措嘉和手持一支箭的曼達拉瓦相伴其側。周圍環繞著空行母、諸佛、傳承持有者和憤怒護法的隨從。
