斯尚谊，1934年出生手河南焦作。1953年毕业于中央美术学院绘画系并继续攻读研究生。1957年结业于马克西莫夫油画训练班，并留校在版面系教授素描课;1962年调入油画系第一画室任教。1983年，担任中央美术学院副院长，1987年任中央美术学院院长。1996年起兼任中国文学艺术界联合会副主席，1998年起兼任中国美术家协会主席:第五任、第六任中国美术家协会主席。第十二届全国政协常委。
