自在观音，被认为是观世音菩萨三十三种化身之一，代表着面容俊美、姿态典雅的观音形象。在诸多大乘经典，如《楞严经》、《法华经》、《华严经》中，都有关于其的记述、可见信仰之广泛。事实上，在早期印度及唐、五代—宋金时期的中国中原地区大乘佛教艺术中，描绘自在观音题材的雕塑作品亦十分流行。此尊自在观音呈游戏坐，左手支地，右手自然搭于右膝，宽肩束腰，体态匀称，造型优美，手脚刻划写实。面相丰满圆润，眉目细长，双目微合，神态安详。高发髻，头戴风帽，正中端坐阿弥陀佛化佛，是观音菩萨身份的重要标识。胸前饰连珠式璎珞，腰系束带，下身着长裙。衣缘錾刻有花纹带，生动自如，采用了汉地造像的写实性表现手法。尤其是腰间束带具有鲜明的明代汉地造像风格特征。整体衣纹生动写实，飘逸流畅，表现出高超的工艺水平。
