山姆．弗朗西斯出生於加州聖馬特奧，作品受到印象派色彩與東方哲學影響，時常以一種超越想像力的方式來捕捉光影、色彩和動態。他相信藝術，不是為了再現看得到的世界，而是讓色彩來喚醒觀者的感官與知覺。如同《Untitled》一幅，鮮明亮麗的血紅和溢流的綠藍色，環繞成框如同形制一般，使中央的留白成為視覺焦點。對他而言，紙白同時是白色，也是無色。這系列如色環般的作品，在空間、色彩之間，可以察覺到一絲東方哲思的氣息。
