莊喆曾執教於東海大學建築系，1966年曾獲美國洛克菲勒三世基金會資助，赴美研究當代世界藝術，自七〇年代後旅居於美國紐約創作至今。 他有意將中國繪畫的「筆法」滲入西畫的創作，於是中西渾融，自創一格。莊喆期待的是一種中國新山水畫的表現，即現在大家所稱的新中國畫，除了山水，也可以涵括人物與花鳥等任何題材。
