ÜBERLEBENSGROßER KOPF DES DRUKPA KUNLEY. Tibet oder Nepal. 18. Jh. Kupferbronze in Repoussé mit Vergoldung und bemalt mit Pigmenten. Der beeindruckend große Kopf zeigt stilisierte, überbetonte Gesichtszüge und eine aufwendige Frisur. Der Kopf ist aus zwei Teilen zusammengesetzt. Die Ohren und der Haarknoten sind separat gearbeitet und angesetzt, wie auch der Standfuß, welcher den Ansatz der Schultern zeigt.Der charakteristische Knebelbart lässt darauf schließen, dass es sich um ein Portrait von Drukpa Kunley handeln könnte. Dieser lebte 1455-1529 in Tibet und wurde unsterblich in der Erzähltradition in Bhutan als 'Heiliger Narr'. Die Geschichten vermitteln Belehrung durch unkonventionelles Verhalten und haben manchmal erotische Inhalte, die das Problem der körperlichen Begierden thematisieren. The impressively large head shows stylized, overstated facial features and an elaborate hairstyle. The head is composed of two parts. The ears and the chignon are separately worked and riveted to the head, as well as the stand in shape of the shoulders. The Vandyke beard gives the idea, that this might be a portrait of Drukpa Kunley. He lived 1455-1529 in Tibet and was made immortal in the oral tradition of Bhutan as 'holy madman'. The sometimes erotic stories featuring him have unconventional themes and are teaching about the problems of carnal desires in the Buddhist world.
