SELTENE UND AUßERGEWÖHNLICHE GROßE TUMBUAN-GIEBELMASKE. Papua-Neuguinea, mittleres Sepik-Gebiet, Sangriman am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Krosmeri und Blackwater. Erste Hälfte des 20. Jh. Gruppe der Abelam. Rotang-Gestell, überflochten mit rötlichem Kletterfarn (Lygodium) und bemalt mit Erdpigmenten. Die flache, schalenförmige Maske zeigt ein stilisiertes Gesicht mit einem Grat für die Nase, der unten durch zwei seitlich platzierte Grate auch den Mund darstellt. Die Augen sind separat gearbeitet und appliziert. Seitlich und unten sind fünf ohrenartige Bögen angesetzt. Ungewöhnlich ist der gute Erhaltungszustand der Bemalung, die auf dem flexiblen Material naturgemäß recht schnell abgerieben wird. Für die Abelam steht der Anbau und die Verarbeitung von Yams an zentraler Stelle. Die verschiedenen Stadien werden mit Zeremonien und Festen gefeiert. Dazu gehörten auch Tanzgewänder und Masken. Solche großen Exemplare hingen allerdings am Giebel der bis zu 25 Meter hohen, reich geschmückten Kult- und Geisterhäuser, die als Hauptort der Verbindung mit den Ahnen den Männern vorbehalten waren. First half of the 20th c. Abelam people group.Rotang frame, braided with reddish climbing fern (Lygodium) and painted with earth pigments. The flat, bowl-shaped mask shows a stylized face with a ridge for the nose, which is elongated until the mouth, which is shown by two ridges placed laterally. The eyes are worked separately and appliquéd. There are five ear-like arches at the sides and below. Unusual is the good condition of the overpainting, which is likely to be rubbed off due to the flexibility of the woven material. For the Abelam the cultivation and processing of yams is central. The various stages are celebrated with ceremonies and festivals. This also included dances in robes and masks. Such large masks, however, where fixed on the pediment of the up to 25 meters high, richly decorated cult and ghost houses.
