STELE DES VISHNU ALS VAMANA. Indien, evtl. Sarnath. 10./11. Jh. oder später. Rötlicher, evtl. Chunar-Sandstein mit sehr fein ausgearbeiteten Details. Stehend in abhanga, die beiden Hauptarme sind in varada mudra gesenkt und halten den Gebetskranz und das Muschelhorn, das zweite Armpaar ist erhoben und hält das chakra (bzw. einen Diskus) und die Keule. Rechts und links seiner Mandorla ist jeweils eine sitzende, zu seinen Füßen stehen vier weitere Figuren.Die Darstellung erzählt von der Wiedergeburt des Gottes Vishnu als kleinwüchsiger Vamana, der dann allerdings zu ungeheurer Größe anwuchs und mit zwei Schritten Himmel und Erde durchmessen konnte. Shown standing in abhanga, the two main arms lowered in varada mudra and holding the prayer wreath and the conch, the second pair of arms raised and holding the chakra (resp. a discus) and the club. To the right and left to his aureole each a sitting figure, with four further standing figures at his feet. The shaft introduces the reincarnation of the god Vishnu as the small Vamana, who however grew to an incredible size and could cover heaven and earth with two steps. Height 53 cm, width 26cm.
