|砚呈圆形，造型规矩，盒盖及砚身以子母口相扣合。|外壁髹朱漆，中部饰一朵盛开的莲花，其侧以黑漆描金填饰两条螭龙，龙身遒曲，龙纹用细密的阴刻线刻画，颇具动感，生动传神。|盒内为漆砂砚。|漆砂砚是以轻细金刚砂调和适度的色漆髹涂于木质砚胎上制作而成，具有轻便和美观实用的特色，『质类澄泥而绝轻，入水不沉』。|此工艺自西汉时期即已出现，宋代以后失传，清初扬州匠人卢映之仿南宋漆砂砚而恢复其技法，此后得以流传。
