2nd-3rd century AD. A ceramic oil lamp with round nozzle, volute scroll to each side; deep discus with an image of a donkey copulating with a woman laying on her back. Cf. Bailey, D.B. Catalogue of Roman Lamps in the British Museum. Vol. III. Roman Provincial Lamps, 1988, Q3271, p.65 and pl.119; also, Johns, C. Sex or Symbol. Erotic Images of Greece and Rome, 1982, illus. on p.109. 51 grams, 10.3cm (4"). Property of a professional Austrian gentleman; part of his private collection since the 1990s. Roman lamps featuring erotic scenes of male and female couples on their discus are fairly common. Apart from representations of the legend of Leda and the Swan (Zeus in disguise) scenes of bestiality are rare, the majority feature a monkey and a woman. Scenes involving a woman with a horse or donkey are excessively rare. Fine condition. Excessively rare.
