3rd millennium BC. Group of carved stone cylinder seals, all with original typed and signed scholarly notes by the late W. G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993 and accompanied by museum quality impressions comprising: Mesopotamian (3), with notes: 'Cylinder seal of white marble, 32 x 19mm. Two registers: above frieze of animals, below more but different animals. Rare design, but seal worn. Mesopotamia or West Iran, c. 2400-2200 B.C.'; 'Cylinder seal of fossil shell, 34 x 20mm. A contest scene of one lion, two bulls with human faces, and four rescuing heroes. Mesopotamia c. 2400-2200 B.C. Worn.' and 'Cylinder seal of fawn stone, 32 x 17mm. A contest scene: two lions savaging two differentiated horned animals, with parts of other such animals as fillers. Mesopotamian, c.2400-2200 B.C. Condition good.' with another: 'Cylinder seal of white marble, 32 x 25mm. Group of standing figures. Syria or West Iran, c. 2500-2000 B.C. worn and some recutting.'. 100 grams total, 32-34mm (1 1/4"). From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s; inventory numbers 149,150,151 & 153.
