Early 6th century AD. A slender silver-gilt bow brooch comprising: a D-shaped headplate with arch of roundels and notched fillet, five radiating D-shaped knops, broad bow with roundels to each edge, footplate with chip-carved lateral panels and median reserved band with punched offset triangles; catchplate and remains of ferrous pin to the reverse. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item V.3.11. 23 grams, 69mm (2 3/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s. Very fine condition.
