19th century AD.A rectangular wooden icon with mounting slots and bars to the reverse, metal frame with repoussé acanthus-leaf detailing and rosette to each corner, central figure of Mary and infant Jesus flanked by painted robed figures in lateral voids; metal nimbus with radiating arms surrounding the heads of Mary and Jesus, applied pearls and faceted glass (?) studs surrounding Mary's head; red Cyrillic text citing 'ТИХВИНСКИЙ' (the Tikhvinskiy monastery), possibly 'Most holy and blessed Tikhvinskiy '. 1.9 kg, 35 x 29.5cm (13 3/4 x 11 1/2").From a London collection; acquired on the German art market in the 1980s. Fine condition, usage wear to frame.
