1st-2nd century AD. A carved marble D-shaped stele fragment with low relief carving of two standing figures; to the right the nude figure of Hercules (Greek Heracles) with athletic body, leaning on a notched club, fabric draped over his left hand, bearded face with voluminous hair; to the left a taller nude Bacchus (Greek Dionysus) with left arm raised above the head, holding a bunch of grapes (?), head and right upper body now absent; to the left of the figure the rear part of a seated dog Maera, the hound of Erigone. 2.2 kg, 26cm (10 1/4"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. Fair condition.
