Late 1st millennium BC. A bronze statuette in the form of a stag beetle comprising: tongue-shaped elytra (wing cases), incised to the centre and decorated with four dots, oblong pronotum with two dots and wide head from which extend two mandibles; to the reverse, six applied legs. 24 grams, 8.4cm (3 1/4"). From a private collection; formed 1965-1975. Fine condition, one leg re-attached. Extremely rare.
