Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-2nd century AD. A silver pendant with two addorsed phalloi and median vulva, loop above. 5.34 grams, 29mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. The standard form of apotropaic pendant used especially by the Roman military comprised a representation of male genitals flanked by an erect phallus and a hand in the fica gesture with the thumb placed between the first and second fingers. These are all symbols of aggression, and thus of protection towards the wearer. The present pendant shows the much less common motifs of two erect phalloi and female genitals between. Fine condition.
