1st-2nd century AD. A glass fragment with deep blue base and applied white glass profile male figure with wreath in the hair, draped mantle, arm bent and hand raised. Cf. Whitehouse, D. Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass, vol.1, New York, 1997, item 20 for type. 77 grams, 91mm (3 1/2"). From an old English family collection, formed in the 1950s; formerly with Pierre Bergé & Associates, Paris, 15 December 2009, lot 506 (10,000-12,000 euros); accompanied by a report by Sidney Goldstein, dated 21 March 1998, and copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé catalogue pages. Fine condition. Rare.
