A hollow-formed gilt-bronze crossbow brooch comprising three onion-shaped knops to the headplate with stepped profile; deep square-section bow, tongue-shaped footplate with catch to the reverse; hinged pin. Cf. Hattatt, R. Ancient and Romano-British Brooches, Sherborne, 1982, item 103. 20 grams, 84mm (3 1/2"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Fine condition.
