Pair of carved wood dancers from Thailand, standing with turned out feet on a wooden base with back foot resting on smaller platform just in front of a child figure. The pair is not identical, but symmetrical, with the figures gesturing in mirror image of each other and the child figures somewhat different between the two statues. The dancers are garbed in pants or tucked up sarong with a sash or belt that hangs down in large, trefoil chevrons with curling fringe. The upper garment is textured with dotted half circles which evoke overlapping scales or links. Flames extend from the sash over the thighs, curling backward, and from the back arching down and up toward the elbows. The dancers' hands are raised, with one hand dipping behind the back holding a double-bladed knife and the other hand extended forward with palm upturned. Pointed headdress with flaming ear caps. One figure has smooth, feminine face, second figure has a pug nose, large teeth and moustaches over snarling mouth. Wood has been stained, 'female' dancer slightly lighter than other. Decorative carving all over. Dimensions are: 29 inches high X 8 1/2 inches long X 6 1/2 inches wide at base. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Fingers broken on hands of both figures; arms have either been repaired or were constructed in segments, not perfectly fitted together. Dagger attached to hand with nail. Crown loose on male/monstrous dancer. Wood also broken on back sash of female dancer.
