1st century AD. A silver hoop with impressed legend 'GEMINA · MARTIA · VICTRIX' relating to the 14th Legion. 5.57 grams, 28.80mm overall, 25.45mm internal diameter (approximate size British Z+5, USA 14 3/4, Europe 35.08, Japan 33) (1"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. The Legio quarta decima Gemina (The Twinned Fourteenth Legion) was an Imperial Roman army unit raised by Julius Caesar in 57 BC. The cognomen Gemina (twinned) was adopted when it was combined with another legion after the Battle of Actium. The cognomens Martia Victrix (warlike and victorious) were added due to service in the Pannonian War (c. AD 9) and the defeat of the Boudiccan revolt in AD 61.
