1st-2nd century AD. A bronze disc brooch with five studs to the edge, central silver plaque with repoussé points forming the text 'LEG/IX'; sprung pin and catch to the reverse; accompanied by a laminated collector's label reading 'Rare Roman legionary disc brooch gilded copper alloy with central wreath in silver leaf, bearing the letters 'LEG IX' (9th Legion), the letters applied in the punctim technique from the reverse, pin intact. 1st-2nd century AD. Authenticated by Paul Roberts, Dept. of Greek and Roman antiquities, British Museum 30/5/2006'. 22 grams, 45mm (1 3/4"). From the Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, formed since 1985; identified by Dr Paul Roberts at the British Museum in 2006; accompanied by a collection ticket.
