A silver crossbow brooch of eraly type with mushroom-shaped knops to crossbar and head, deep D-section bow with band of punched triangles to the outer face continuing to the parallel-sided foot with chamfered sides, hinged pin to the reverse and catch behind the foot; feint incised lettering to the bow, perhaps 'VTEFI' (for utere felix 'use [this] happily'"). 25.8 grams, 63mm (2 1/2"). Property of an Oxfordshire collector; acquired from Ancient Times, Cirencester, UK; accompanied by an old dealer's ticket.
