1st century BC-4th century AD. A rectangular silver mount with chamfered edges, pierced at each end to accept the domed studs, with incised legend 'LEG X FRE' for Legio X Fretensis. 5.9 grams, 54mm (2"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. The Tenth Legion received the cognomen Fretensis from its participation in the Battle of Naulochus, which took place near the Strait of Messina known in Latin as Fretum Siculum. The Tenth Legion was raised by Octavian in around 36 BC and served in various campaigns mainly in the Near East. It took part in the First Jewish-Roman War (66Â73 AD) and the massacre at Masada, as well as the suppression of Simon Bar Kokhba's revolt. It was still active in the last years of the 4th century AD.
