100 BC-250 AD. A late preclassic hollow-formed terracotta standing mammal of burnished red clay, the tail formed as a spout, old collector's label stating 'West Mexico, Colima' as the findspot. 933 grams, 21cm (8 1/4"). From the Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, formed since 1985; acquired from Mellors and Kirk Fine Art Sale, 3-4 March 2011, lot 356; previously in the collection of the late Richard Cotterell; formerly acquired in 1997 from Antiquarius Antiquities, Nottingham, UK; prior to this in an old Spanish collection. The Colima produced numerous works of clay depicting a wide range of animals.
