6th-10th century AD. A Maya pottery whistle in the form of a figure seated sideways on an animal facing left, vent to the underside and old collector's label stating 'Jaina Island, Campeche Coast'. See Winning, H. Pre Columbian Art of Mexico and Central America, New York, 1969, p. 321 for a range of moulded figurines from the late classic period. 244 grams, 12.7cm (5"). From the Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, formed since 1985; acquired from Mellors and Kirk Fine Art Sale, 3-4 March 2011, lot 356; previously in the collection of the late Richard Cotterell; formerly acquired in 1997 from Antiquarius Antiquities, Nottingham, UK.
