§ Salvatore Meli (Italian,1929-2011), a unique glazed earthenware centre table, circa 1953, with oval glass top supported on the head of a mythical hound, enamelled in colours, signed 'Meli - Roma' 71 x 115 x 86cm (28 x 45 x 34in) Provenance: Christie's London, 16 February, 1994, lot 430 Private collection, United Kingdom Acquired from the above by the present owner, 2006 Other Notes: Salvatore Meli was born in 1929 in Ragussa, Sicily and was a significant figure in post-war Italian Design. He was influenced by Salvatore Fiume, a sculptor and painter, who strongly impacted his style of dynamic and assymetric forms. Most of Meli's works are plates or jugs, but his technique of constructing as opposed to throwing his pottery allowed him to create much larger scale items, such as this table. Meli participated in international exhibitions across Europe, Asia and North America throughout his career - most notably the Milan Triennale and the Venice Bienale.
