§ Salvatore Meli (Italian, 1929-2011), a monumental earthenware charger, painted with three stylised figures in black and blue to a white ground, signed 'Meli - Roma' 56.50cm (22in) Other Notes: Born in 1929 in Ragussa, Sicily, Meli was a significant figure in post-war Italian Design. One of his major influnces was Salvatore Fiume, a sculptor and painter who strongly impacted his style of dynamic and assymetric forms. Most of Meli's works are plates or jugs but his technique of constructing as opposed to throwing his pottery allowed him to create much larger scale items, such as the glazed earthenware table. Meli participated in international exhibitions across Europe, Asia and North America throughout his career, most notably the Milan Triennale and the Venice Bienale. He was named the "enfant terrible of Italian Ceramic art"
