Influenced by her belief in both Jewish and Buddhist religions, Holzhandler often portrayed intimate scenes, such as embracing lovers or mother and child, and imbued them with mystical and religious symbolism. Her work possesses a naivety and innate innocence, contrasting with her own early personal experiences. Her first exhibition was hosted by the gallerist, Helen Lessore in 1954.
